Seven Reasons Why You Did Not Get a Stimulus Check

This article pertains to the stimulus of 2008.

You may be one of the millions who didn’t get a stimulus check and you are wondering why.  Here are some reasons that may apply to you.  First of all, this is just a gift of our tax money from your Government, and they have made some rules that must be met to get the gift.  The problem is, people who paid no taxes are getting this. Did you know that many people who paid no taxes got a check?  That should tell you it is a gift, not a rebate.

Okay, so why didn’t you get the check? Here are some of the reasons a family or single person would not get the money.

1.  If you were counted as a dependent on someone else’s taxes, you don’t get the money.  This applies to many people in the age group from 18-25.  Most college kids don’t get anything because of this.

2.  You made too much money in 2007.  See my post titled Tax Rebate Stimulus Details Explained. In a nutshell, if you make over 150,000 as a couple or 75,000 as an individual, you get less.  Then following a formula, it gets reduced 5% for each dollar over those amounts.

3.  Do you have a Social Security Number? If not, no money.  This is to prevent giving this to illegal aliens, I believe.

4.  Did you file a tax return for 2007?  If not, you may not get the money.  This especially applies to senior citizens who may have a Social Security income, but don’t make enough to have to file taxes. If that is the case, file a return this year.

5.  Maybe yours will come later?  If you met all the requirements, but filed on April 15th because you owed money, your stimulus will likely be much later.  The check mailing tables were only for those who fell in some strict rules. If you requested an extension, you won’t get the stimulus until the taxes are filed.

6. If you owe taxes from a previous year, the IRS is not going to give you money.  They will take your stimulus and use it to pay against your back taxes.  At least, that is the way I understand it.

7.  Do you owe other money to the Federal Government, such as defaulted student loans? If you do, the Government may keep this money and apply it to those loans and late fees.. Again, this is my understanding.

Now it’s your turn.  Can you shed some light on other reasons why people wouldn’t get the stimulus?  Leave a comment here.

My husband and I met all criteria and by the payment schedule we should have received our payment on May 16 or not later than Jun 6. However, we did owe this year and mailed our payment to the IRS on April 13. The check was cashed within a week. So I know that they processed our 2007 Return. So now I’m wondering what the hold up is on the stimulus check. I can really use it now that gas has gone up to $4.09.

  • I received a letter saying I was due a check but the lady that did my taxes said 2 months ago due to the money I took out of an inherited IRA I would not. Does not make sense. Even with the ira money plus my husband and my income is not greater than 150K Who’s right ? Please help :)

Reply: Stephanie, I’m not sure who is right but it seems to me that you would be due the check. You may want to contact the IRS and see if you can get a person in the phone.. If you filed a paper return near April 15th, you may just have to wait a little longer. From what you say, it seems you would be due a check. Is it possible that you owe the Government something? Defaulted Student loans?, Past taxes, etc? If you owe any money to Government, they will use the check to help pay it off.

I was supposed to receive my stimulus check in the beginning of May. It is July 23 and I still haven’t seen it. I got a letter in the mail a couple of weeks after I was supposed to receive my check and it said if I didn’t receive it in 6 weeks to call. I haven’t been able to get through to anyone no matter how many times I try to call.
I had a remainder of a debt for uniforms from when I was in the military but I had already paid that off before the checks even went out. I still haven’t heard anything and at this point I have no clue what to do.

I was qualified to get a stimulus check from the Government, and I didn’t get one. I found out 2 months after I was supposed to get it that, since my parents FILED my taxes for me (because I didn’t know how), I was not able to get one just for that reason. The government should of made the decision earlier or let us know what MIGHT happen so that ALL of us get our checks. Even if we’re ledgible or not for.

REPLY from Mack: Megan, if your parents filed for you, is it possible that they also claimed you as a dependent? If so, you would not qualify. I am just suggesting why .. Just because your parents filed for you, that should not “dis-qualify” you.

my parents are getting retirement and social sec checks should they get stimulus check.
    Answer:
Dray, It is hard to say.. First, did they file a tax return? I would assume so, but if no tax return, no check. I would thikn they would get at least the minimum 300 dollars. Maybe try to call the IRS ?

I am not getting my Stimulus check according to the IRS because my married name is not on my SS Card. However, I got my tax return back.

I got a letter saying mine was coming in a couple of days in mid-July. Never got it. Filed my taxes as normal. I was supposed to get mine late, but it was supposed to come eventually.

I / we are eligible to receive a stimulus check, however I never received a letter or check, and some one told me that it could be because my wife never changed her name with Social Security. Is this possibly true? It has just been an over sight and as far as her number, we’ve been filing jointly since 2002. So why would it matter just because she did not change her name? Besides that I can’t figure out we would not have received a check. Thank you.

    Answer from Mack:
Daniel, I honestly don’t know. I would try to call them at the numbers you can find in this comment section and see.

Can someone clarify this for me? I heard that if you did not receive a stimulus check this spring/summer you will actually get it when you file next winter? I heard that this is because this is just and “advance” of a single year tax break for filing our 2008 returns. If so, that would be nice, since I graduated in 2007, and as such my parents claimed me.Any help would be appreciated.

Comment from Mack:Craig, I don’t believe you will get any stimulus check in any form if you were claimed as a dependent in 2007. That is my understanding. The whole talk about this being an ‘advance” is just a way for the gov’t to pay for this and account for it in the 2008 tax returns.

I am still in a state of shock that I did not qualify for last year’s stimulus check! I earn slightly over $100,000 – I am a homeowner and a single mother (2 kids) and while I am not struggling, I am certainly not living a life of leisure. How does this government justify giving a check to deadbeats who earned ZERO income and not to a hard-working single mother??!!! I am sure I will get shafted on this next stimulus check as well!

My husband and I filed our 2008 taxes the other day and were told by our preparer that we will be getting the remainder of our stimulus check soon (We only got $750 last spring, not the 1,200 and do not owe money to the gov.). I would like to know if this is true and if so when will they start sending the checks? Thank you.

  • I did not file self employment but then did witch cost over 900.00 to file with jackson Hewitt .My ducks are in a roll as some say with the IRS . I should have recived as did others .Thank You for your moment.
