Studies have shown that when you pay cash, you generally will spend less, studies say 12 -18 % less.  That is a big savings. There is just something about having to hand over the green stuff that makes it harder to do.  We often just swipe the card, could even be a debit card, and think since we pay it off at the end of the month, or in some cases " get a few % back", we are really doing ok.  But it seems the truth is, we loose.  This Christmas, pay some of those big 100 gift purchases in cash, and "feel the burn"..
